Heeft Spieth de yips?

Haney gaf zijn mening aan een verslaggever van sportzender ESPN:

‘He's got to get his putting figured out. I think he will. But he has to. And I think that spilled into the rest of his game. When I watch him putt, he visibly has the yips. You watch his hands on short putts and there is a tremor in there. I don't care if the putt goes in or doesn't. He was center cut on his first putt at the Ryder Cup. But his hands were shaking. He had to miss more short putts than anybody on tour.’

Spieth miste vrijdag de cut in het Sony Open bij Honolulu op één slag. Zijn laatste zege op het hoogste niveau? The Open van 2017 op Royal Birkdale.

In de statistieken-categorie ‘Strokes Gained Putting’ eindigde de drievoudig Major-winnaar vorig seizoen als 123ste. In 2015 was Spieth negende, in 2016 tweede, in 2017 39ste.

Volgens Spieth komt het allemaal goed, al zijn de cijfers niet te ontkennen. 'Putten was het afgelopen jaar niet mijn sterkste punt. Ik weet eigenlijk niet waarom. Het was vooral mechanisch en vervolgens werd het ook een beetje mentaal.'

'Maar als ik dezelfde positie, dezelfde timing en dezelfde stroke voel als die ik de laatste vijf of tien tien jaar heb gehad – minus een deel van vorig seizoen – dan heb ik op de green meer zelfvertrouwen dan wie dan ook.'

Toch nog even terug naar Hank Haney. In 2014 schreef David Owen voor The New Yorker een fraai verhaal over de yips. Daarin speelde Haney ook een rol. Hij heeft, zo blijkt uit het stuk, niet de yips met de putter, maar met de driver.



‘Six or seven years ago, I played a round of golf in a foursome that included Hank Haney, who at the time was Tiger Woods’s coach. Haney’s golf swing was exceedingly strange. On the first tee, after he lined up his shot, he drew his driver back high in the air while turning to look at the clubhead, took a baseball-like practice swing well above the ball—then, immediately, took the club all the way back again and swung. The last part looked pretty normal, but if I hadn’t known who Haney was I wouldn’t have guessed that his occupation was teaching golf.’
